Past to Present
Bestowed with the holy touch of saint soldier, the tenth Sikh Guru, Shri Guru Gobind Singh ji, this small and sleepy hamlet, then known as Khidrane Di Dhab suddenly became Muktsar when inspired by a brave woman warrior from Majha, Mai Bhago, 40 Sikh warriors from Guru Gobind Singh’s army fought a decisive battle giving a crushing defeat to the Mughals and attained martyrdom here. This college, blessed with the name of the first Sikh Guru Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji, attributes its existence to the farsightedness of S. Parkash Singh Badal, the then Chief Minister of Punjab, and persistent and patient efforts of an octogenarian philanthropist of the city, Dr. Kehar Singh. Feeling the acute need of women education in this educationally backward region of Malwa belt, Guru Nanak Education Society was founded to start this college in 1970 under the project of mass celebrations to mark the 500th year of birth of Shri Guru Nanak Dev ji. The founder Principal, Ms. Baljinder Kaur Mann, a personality with a great administrative acumen was deputed from Government College, Patiala.
In 2000, the college was taken over by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Commitee, Sri Amritsar Sahib (S.G.P.C). Affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh, the college is situated in the southernmost part of Sri Muktsar Sahib in the vicinity of historical gurudwaras Sri Tibbi Sahib, Sri Rakabsar Sahib and Sri Datansar Sahib. The College campus, sprawled in 14.8 acres, has a pleasant and peaceful environment.
The institute aims at enabling its students in pursuing useful careers as well as shaping them into good human beings and responsible citizens of the country. It apostolates a firm faith in Gurbani and believes that the purpose of education is selfless service of humanity. Some fifty years back, the institution that had started with a UG program in Humanities only, now has expanded its horizons with a wide range of streams and courses in Basic Sciences, Bio-technology, Fashion Designing, Information Technology, Commerce along with a number of UG & PG courses in Humanities.
