History of the department
The Department of Biotechnology was established in 2008 in Guru Nanak College, Sri Muktsar Sahi, foreseeing the demands of the new globalizing world. The department provides students with modern scientific knowledge and highly qualified faculty members. The department contains well-furnished labs for biochemistry, microbiology and plant tissue culture and well- equipped classrooms. The department offers the following courses:
B. Sc. Biotechnology:
A 3-year undergraduate degree which offers expertise in genetic engineering, molecular biology, bioprocessing, and bioinformatics. Students will be skilled to conduct research, analyze experimental results, and apply ethical practices in the biotechnology field, preparing them for careers in healthcare, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and environmental science.Bachelor of Vocation:
Two multiple exit, vocational courses were introduced in the year 2018 under the University Grants Commission (UGC) National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF) Scheme for skills development-based higher education:- B. Voc. Food Science and Technology: The course opens opportunities in the fields of food safety, quality control, and innovation, offering high-demand careers in a growing industry.
- B. Voc. Medical Lab Technology: The course aims to prepare the students as skilled professionals in healthcare, combining theoretical and practical learning in areas of clinical biochemistry, microbiology, hematology, immunology, and pathology.

Admission Guidelines
1. Eligibility Criteria:
- B.Sc. Biotechnology: 10+2 (Medical/Non-medical) with 50% marks
- B. Voc. Food Science and Technology: 10+2 (any stream) with 50% marks
- B. Voc. Medical Lab Technology: 10+2 (any stream) with 50% marks
- Certificate Course in Food Processing & Preservation: 10+2 (any stream) with 50% marks
2. Documents required at the time of Admission:
- Certificates of Matriculation and 10+2,
- Adhaar card,
- passport-size photo,
- Category certificate,
- An income certificate,
- A residence certificate,
- Bank copy,
- Affidavit of any gap in education.

1. Opening of Food Hut, a student-led business start-up


2. Addition of bakery items to Food Hut by Avneet Singh, student of B. Voc. FST


3. Organisation of one-day workshop on “Tech Startup Connect and Grow, sponsored by PSCST, Chandigarh.”


4. The Gold Medal was won by Ms. Navjot Kaur in B. Voc. Food Science and Technology examinations 2024 at the 72 nd convocation ceremony held at Punjab University.
