History of the department
The department of biotechnology has been established in 2008 in Guru Nanak College for Girls, Sri Muktsar Sahib. This department has been established foreseeing the demands of new globalizing world. The department is going on the lines of new emerging technology trends in the area of education. There is no such Institute in this area which provides an undergraduate course in Biotechnology. The department is providing modern scientific knowledge to the students with well qualified faculty members..
The department contains well furnished labs of biochemistry, microbiology and plant tissue culture and well equipped class rooms. The department also organizes various activities, extension lectures and seminars from time to time, so as to inculcate scientific attitude and to upgrade the knowledge of students and teachers about current affairs..

- Educational visit to National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal on 12 th – 13 th Feb 2016.
- Participation in Tech- fest :- B.Sc. biotech 1 sem students participated in National level Technical festival ‘TECHINVENT’ organized by Chandigarh University Gharuan on 3 rd April, 2015
- Team 1:- secured 2 nd position for DNA model prepared from waste material.
- Team 2:- secured 3 rd position for ‘Chemical garden’ model.
- Special lecture by Mr. Nitin Dhingra, Representative of Monsanto India Pvt. Ltd. on ‘Prospectives of biotechnology in Agriculture’ was organized on 23 rd Feb., 2015.
- Workshop on ‘Introduction to Biotechnology’ was organized by department on 28 th Jan, 2015.
- 4 days 3 nights tour to Rajasthan was organized by the department on oct 2 nd , 2015. Places visited were jaipur, ajmer, pushkar.
- Celebrated Ozone day on 23 sept, 2014 with special lecture by Mr. Paramjit Singh Dhingra , Director, Regional Centre, Muktsar sahib
- Organized ‘Environment fair’ in collaboration with science department on Feb 5, 2013.
- Special lecture was organized on “Applications of Biotechnology in Agriculture” on interaction with Mr. Khushwinder Singh Brar, Senior Plant Breeder from Krishi Vigyan Kendre, Bathinda on Oct 19, 2012.
